On Monday 20th June, BBC 2 aired a documentary about UK manufacturing presented by Ewan Davis. During the programme there is a section that features our very own Opus posture chairs at Yehudi Menhuin!

Soundproof Drum Room installed into drummers home

Our Boxy acoustic music practice rooms can be utilised for a virtually unlimited amount of musical uses. They are used as band rehearsal rooms, music practice rooms in schools, colleges and Universities, vocal booths, control rooms in recording studios, and much more. They are also widely used as soundproof drum rooms.

We recently installed one of our music practice rooms into a converted garage/barn in Faversham, Kent for a young drummer who wanted to play late into the night without disturbing surrounding neighbours. We designed this stunning soundproof drum room to fit perfectly within the existing building, and had to work around structural obstacles such as supportive ceiling beams.

Our client is now able to play drums at any hour of the day or night, and he doesn’t disturb anyone around him. He also uses the acoustic pod as a band rehearsal room with his friends and colleagues. The interior of the pod has been beautifully finished with printed acoustic panels, a glass acoustic door, and contemporary blue neon plugs and electrical points.

Bedstone College - 5 Acoustic Pods installed in Music Department

Bedstone College has a vibrant and thriving music music department - In 2010 they approached Amadeus Acoustic Solutions Ltd as they were desperate for some new facilities. The demands upon the music department were such that a recording studio, band practice room, and 3 smaller music teaching rooms were ALL required over and above existing facilities. The college had a small amount of vacant space that they thought would physically accommodate such requirements, but they were under the impression that there was NO way they could happily house such facilities together in the same area without creating a distractingly unproductive environment due to the vast amount of noise that would be created within each room or studio.

We at Amadeus Acoustic Solutions Ltd introduced the College to our BOXY© acoustic pods. We took them to an installation at Stonyhurst College and they were blown away by the product. Amadeus and BOXY© were subsequently employed to design and install 5 separate pods and were able to create a complete new facility that fulfilled the school’s brief; all in under one week!

Lessons can now take place in each room without interfering with what else is happening in the department, and percussion can now sit happily next to piano, violin and singing lessons.

Glasgow Music Studios

Amadeus were approached by a young female entrepreneur from Glasgow, Lynne Howard, at the end of 2009. She had spotted a niche in the rehearsal space market in Glasgow and decided she wanted to do something about it; she began planning a brand new and exciting rehearsal studio – namely ‘Glasgow Music Studios’. This was her brief:

"Glasgow is a vibrant musical city supporting many live music venues, acts and performers. There is a demand for quality rehearsal and recording facilities across the city. This was where I saw a gap in the market and decided to carry out some research into what musicians wanted? It was concluded that the most important thing to musicians was 'quality of sound.'

Glasgow Music Studios Ltd. will provide top quality rehearsal studio space for musicians in Glasgow. We will be also using the studios for private tutoring and workshops for young people (Summer 2011 onwards)."

Having found the Amadeus website she contacted us immediately to talk about our BOXY© Modular Rooms. Having only seen the rooms online, she fell in love with the contemporary style of the studios and the versatility, beauty and state-of-the-art nature of the interior decoration. She was also incredibly keen to find out more about the fact that these rooms are fully modular – i.e. If her business was to grow rapidly and a new premises were to be required, she could simply pack the rooms up and re install them else where.

Despite her initial impression, she obviously needed to see how the rooms performed acoustically, and discover with her own eyes how impressive they were in ‘the flesh’ – Therefore we took her to an installation we had recently completed at Cheadle Hulme School. Lynne was blown away by every aspect of the rooms she saw, she fell in love with the product and her mind was made up.

"We choose the Amadeus BOXY© Rooms as they are state of the art studios (first of their kind in Scotland!). The precision design of the studios will help us attract acts and musicians from all over Glasgow. The Amadeus BOXY© rooms allow us to build a strong brand identity based on quality - we felt the relationship between Glasgow Music Studios Ltd and Amadeus was perfect." (Lynne Howard)

During the first half of 2010, Lynne found the perfect location for the studios in Glasgow City centre (see early photos below). From that moment we started to plan and design the three studios that would form the very core of Glasgow Music Studios, working with Lynne every step of the way.

Amadeus in China - Acoustic Rooms installed in Shanghai.

During early 2007 we were asked to design and install a recording studio into a duplex apartment in Manchester. Fast forward to 2009; our client now having moved from Manchester to Shanghai, and being sufficiently impressed by our earlier work, approached us to talk about the possibility of a studio installation in China! This installation would include two very large rooms to be used as a control room and a live room – the live room needed to be large enough to cater for small performances as well as recordings. I’m sure by now it has become apparent that we at Amadeus and our manufacturers ‘Boxylab in Italy, like a challenge and therefore with a high five and big smile we of course said, YES!

Our client owns a highly successful designer fashion brand in China called Mein Grace. See a photo of her Shanghai store below:

The scale of this project was to be at least 20 times larger than the first project in Manchester. Although we have undertaken many installations across the UK that involve a great deal more studios than the proposed installation in Shanghai, the physical size of the individual rooms we were to install in China were far greater than anything we had taken on before. As a result, we took our client to visit variety of large installations in Italy. The ‘Groove Factory’ in Udine, Nr Venice offered the closest template (see photos below). The design process begun…

With Shanghai to become the “EXPO city” for 2010, our client required the Recording Studio and Live Room to be open in the summer. By January 2010 the general arrangement drawings were completed and signed-off and this +100m2 project went into the manufacturing process.

In April, two 40 foot containers were loaded and set off on what was to be a 10 week journey to the port of Shanghai. On Monday, July 5^th the containers arrived in China. The off load and installation process began.

Working in no less than 30° heat, and far higher humidity, the project was completed on July 16^th; just 11 days after commencement. Shanghai can now boast it's largest and most contemporary “state of art” live-room/recording studio. Photos below

Acoustic treatment for The Black Dyke Band.

The Black Dyke Band are one of the worlds most celebrated and illustrious Brass bands. Established over 150 years ago they have a history like no other, with a myriad of awards, achievements, and accomplishments under their proverbial belt. One struggles to select just a handful of such examples when there really are so many to choose from. But to give you a flavour, their affiliation with The Beatles is a nice place to start. They recorded an instrumental version of ‘Yellow Submarine’ for The Beatles in 1968 which was later used as a b-side for one of the bands famous singles. They later worked with McCartney on a track for the Wings album Back to the Egg in 1979. Furthermore, their collaborative work with international superstars doesn’t stop there either – the band have also recorded with Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos and The Beautiful South.

When opting to reside in slightly less Rock ‘n’ Roll but equally prestigious circles, they still find time to tour the world collecting cabinets full of trophy’s and awards along the way. Black Dyke was the first band to achieve the "Grand Slam" in 1985 by winning the Yorkshire regional, European, British Open and National Championship contests. They were also voted BBC Band of the Year. In August 2009, the band undertook a tour of Australia with multi-instrumentalist James Morrison which culminated in a concert at the Sydney Opera House.

Back in April 2007 Amadeus Acoustic Solutions were invited by Dr Nicholas Childs to visit the historical Black Dyke Band Headquarters, and assess the dubious acoustics within the new rehearsal space.

John Locke of Amadeus under took this initial mission and travelled to meet Dr Childs and visit the band room. John briefed our acoustic consultant taking full account of the proposed plans and worked in collaboration with the project architect. It was determined that we were faced with a difficult task – considering the size of the band, and the fundamental nature of the brass instruments, the new band room was less than half the size of that which we would recommend/design for acoustic purposes. Nonetheless, seldom are we presented with a set of ideal circumstances, and resolving a problem such as this is exactly what we do best.

By strategic placement of acoustic absorption panels around the practice room to reduce the Reverberation Time (RT) from 3 seconds down to just over 1 second.

The work was eventually carried out in March 2010, and the rehearsal room works well and looks very impressive. When we carry out an installation such as this we place equal importance on both the acoustic effectiveness of the treatment, and the aesthetic appearance of the interior design. As you will see from the pictures above and below, the installation looks wonderful. We discussed and consulted the colour scheme of the panels with our client in order to achieve an overall 'feel' that suited the band and the room itself. The perfect finishing touch was provided by printing The Black Dyke Band logo on two of the panels, which we all thought looked stunning.

The technical stuff:

A combination of acoustic panel types, dimensions and positions were established to give as near optimum performance as space and budget would allow. The variety of images show fabric covered Absorbors ™ & B.A.D’s ™ these would ensure an RT of around 1 second at mid and high frequencies and 25% more at low frequencies. The band room was used for the first time as recently as July 2010 and proved to be a great success.

Opus chairs in Holland, and a bit of Dutch press!

Here at Amadeus we are thrilled to be able to boast the fact that our Opus Musician posture chairs have made their debut appearance in Holland. They may have put on a dubious performance in the world cup final, but the Dutch certainly understand the importance of good posture for their musicians, and have great taste in chairs!

The Codarts Theatre in Rotterdam, Holland is a prestigious Performing Arts centre that holds an eclectic and versatile mixture of performances; from national ballets to contemporary comedy, from rock bands to opera, and from serious independent theatre to out and out musical classics. The theatre searched the globe for a set of chairs that would look after the health and posture of their musicians. Having tried and tested numerous alternatives they eventually caught wind of the Amadeus Opus Chair. They got in touch with us, and we talked them through all the benefits of the chairs and explained how they have been ergonomically designed to support the musician through practice and performance; and outlined the fact that they are used by the BBC, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Glyndbourne Opera House, LSO St Lukes, The Barbican centre, and by many more prestigious organisations in the UK, and indeed worldwide.

After testing one of the chairs, Codarts were convinced! They immediately placed an order for 100 Opus chairs, and Amadeus had them made at three different seat heights to suit their requirements, and organised all the shipping and delivery.

It’s fair to say that the Codarts centre are thrilled with their chairs, and we have received many a thankful email from the managers and musicians at the centre expressing their gratitude and informing us of their pleasure in using the chairs.

They were so pleased in fact, that they even featured Amadeus and the Opus chairs in their monthly magazine. We were delighted to be part of it, and have now built a wonderful relationship with the Codarts centre.

The Amadeus Photography Competition - at Leeds College of Art

Following our highly successful modular room installation at Leeds College of Art, we decided we needed some decent photos of the rooms to show the world just how special they are.

Now, despite the array of talents we share here at Amadeus HQ, we felt that none of us quite possessed the level of photographic skill required to capture the rooms sufficiently – therefore we racked our brains thinking of who we could employ to undertake this challenging task?

Then, as if from nowhere, it came to us! We have just installed two stunning modular rooms in one of the best art colleges in the country, and what do art colleges have in abundance?... Art Students of course!

So we thought we would give the students at Leeds College of Art the opportunity to photograph the rooms themselves by running our own competition.

We asked students to capture the rooms both inside and out to give a sense of what the rooms were all about; how they utilized the limited space available to create an exciting, contemporary, calm and spacious environment which students and teachers could enjoy.

We had an array of amazing entries, and were thrilled by the response and quality of creative photography we received. Unfortunately, we had the arduous task of having to select only one winner, and two runners up. Below you will see two pictures from each of the competition winners:

Each of the competition winners won a cash prize, and the opportunity to promote their work through Amadeus. Emily Crane (the over all winner) has also been employed by Amadeus to undertake her first comission. We will be sending her to the prestigious Black Dyke Brass Band rehearsal room to photogprah the acoustic refurbishment Amadeus recently undertook. Keep your eyes peeled for the results!

Leeds College of Art - Modular Room Installation

Four glass windows and air circulation system installed:

As the newly created floor was to be located close to very large windows it was decided the entire front walls of each room should be fully glazed; this was also to include one side wall. Visibility and use of Natural Light were an important part of the brief. We also needed to ensure there was no noise transmission as one side of the new rooms is the Theatre which is in regular use. Sound management was a critical feature of the client brief.

As you can see, these very special acoustic rooms are highly unique and look amazing. Nonetheless, it's extremely difficult to photograph them without our professional photographer to hand! As a result Amadeus Acoustic Solutions are running an exciting competition at Leeds College of Art to give students the chance to take a set of stunningly creative photographs of the rooms to be used on Amadeus marketing material. Not only does this give the students a wonderful opportunity to expand their portfolio and work on a 'live brief', we will also be offering three cash prizes to the winners and promoting their work on our website. Instrument Storage, Design & Installation - Royal Russell School

Design and conception.

The prestigious Royal Russell School (pictured below) is a satisfied and loyal customer of Amadeus Performance Equipment Ltd. Set on the grounds of a beautiful site in Surrey, the school has recently expanded in size and built a brand new building which will be used for the study of many different subjects including music and the creative arts.

As a result of this, the school had a responsibility to offer students a safe and secure place to store their musical instruments while at school. Offering such storage not only prolongs the life of the musical instruments, but also keeps the schools insurance premium down as instruments are less likely to be damaged, stolen or lost. Such storage also offers great reassurance to the parents of the musical students, as they are of course more often than not the ones who put their hands in their pockets and purchase the instruments!

Amadeus offer a versatile range of instrument storage solutions, and are able to cater for virtually all needs, requirements and budgets. We worked closely with Royal Russell school to provide a solution that suited them. We considered the vast amount of instruments they wished to store, their strict budget, and the aesthetic qualities they required from the storage. We conducted a detailed site survey to identify and utilise the restricted available space within the school which could be used to store the instruments.

It was eventually decided that the school wanted us to provide them with a combination of movable storage racks and bespoke instrument storage locker units. We designed all the locker units to adhere to the schools brief, and provide drawings and plans at every stage of the design process. All the racks and the locker units are then hand built by our team of highly skilled British joiners and craftsmen.

Delivery and installation.

We believe that it is our duty to see a project through to its final stages. There is nothing worse than entrusting your time and money with a company who seem to be your best friend throughout the initial stages of a sale, but then dump the goods on your doorstep and leave you on your own. Our philosophy is to be there for you at every stage – after all, if we can offer you a fantastic service then you are more likely to want to come back to us in the future. As a result of this we delivered and fully installed the racks and units to the school with pride and pleasure.

Take a look at the photographs below which document the delivery and installation process. You will see how we deal with unforeseen challenges, overcome unpredictable hurdles, and also the pride with which we carry out such work.

When we design the units, we have to preempt the installation and all 'access' logistics. As you can see from the photo below, the biggest of all the bespoke units was specifically designed to be as large as possible without being too big to fit through the door!

The position of this unit within the school was changed from the ground floor to the first floor at the last minute, this meant we had to take it up two flights of stairs by hand. Had we been aware of this before delivery, we would of course have brought the unit in flat packed and assembled it on sight - but as previously mentioned, we are here to provide the very best service we can, and therefore we are more than happy to change details such as this to make the client happy. This rack however, was far too heavy to carry up stairs by hand, therefore we removed all the doors to reduce the overall weight:

Once all the racks and lockers were in place, we made very minor adjustments to the heights and levels of the units to make sure they were flush to one another, and look straight, neat and tidy aggainst the wall. This sort of attention to detail is very important to us:

Amadeus Acoustic Solutions are holding an acoustic door set sale. The sale doors we have on offer were purchased in 2009 for a photo-shoot which did not take place. They have never been used and are in factory fresh condition. Take a look at the photos and details below:

Each door comes with a metal frame, thus the door reference is Pyroporte CLUB 39. It is for insertion into a plasterboard (or similar anchor). The frame is reinforced by a factory installed stabilising wood profile section. The plasterboard fits inside the frame. Each frame is 2048mm x 934mm.

Delivery
We can arrange for pick up from our store and delivery anywhere in the British Isles. There will be a charge for packaging of £25.00 for each door and the delivery will be charged at “Courier cost”. Alternatively we can arrange for buyers to arrange their own pick up.

See before you buy

We can arrange to meet interested parties at our store, this is located near Battle in East Sussex. Alternatively we can always arrange for more detailed photo’s to be taken if so desired.

Installation

We can arrange for our experienced installers to both deliver and install the door/s. A quotation will be offered once we know the geographic location. An aperture must be sufficient to accept the door dimensions as shown.

Stonyhurst College - Modular room installation

The Amadeus Acoustic Solutions pre-Christmas installation of modular acoustic rooms at Stonyhurst College was a roaring success. From offload to completion of the build we took 7 days on site to complete the installation of 5 rooms. Each room performs above and beyond BB93 requirements for insulation, transmission and reverberation times.

This job, along with all the others, highlight the single biggest advantage of our Boxy Modular Rooms. They provide a guaranteed performance, that not only meets the acoustic requirements of BB93 but exceeds them.

From the winding roads of the Umbrian town of Terni, Italy, to the sweeping driveway of Stonyhurst College Lancashire, came 5 Modular Acoustic Rooms ready for installation to begin on a very cold but sunny Thursday 11th December 2008.

With all jobs of this nature the practical implications, such as how to offload items from A to B, are of paramount importance. In the case of this paricular job, the offload point stood 12 metres from and 20 metres above the resting point.

Some heavy duty kit was required to ensure that each pallet was craned in and dropped precisely where required, to allow each piece, that had been meticulously packed and labelled, to be brought in and utilised immediately.

With the rooms safely offloaded the build commenced and completed on Thursday 18th December, 7 days from arrival of the rooms.

St Olaves School, York - Bespoke acoustic panels

Amadeus Acoustic Solutions Ltd were approached by Alan Miller - Architects in September 2009 and asked to submit a price for the installation of acoustic ceiling panels required to calm the very high reverberation within the St Olaves school concert hall. This is something that we are very experienced in dealing with, so both the school and the Architects were in good hands.

The type, shape and dimension of the bespoke panels were jointly developed by the architect and their acoustic consultants, ARM Acoustics. The panels were made very quickly by Acoustic GRG and installed in just 4 days by the specialist team from Amadeus Acoustic Solutions.

As you can see from the photographs below, we pride ourselves not only on the acoustic excellence of our work, but also the aesthetic distinction we create within any given environment. We work very closely with our clients to make sure we deliver on all levels. In this case, the spectacular bespoke panels graced the hall with contemporary charisma without detracting from the purpose, function or style of the building.

University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) - Modular room installation

When the new music department at the University was originally built, the Media Factory determined that they required some specialist rooms in which recorded music and live music would be taught and practiced. It was soon discovered that the playing of any type of music, particularly percussion and amplified guitar, caused distracting sound transmission that travelled all around the MEDIA FACTORY. The volume depended where in the building you were located; nevertheless even at the lower end of the sound spectrum, transmission was distracting. This was having negative effects on teachers and students throughout the University, both in and out of the music department. Therefore, something needed to be done.

Amadeus Acoustic Solutions were delighted when we won the right to supply sound proof modular rooms to the University of Central Lancashire through a public tendering process – we knew we could help alleviate the acoustic issues being experienced by the University and our Boxy modular rooms were the perfect way to do this.

The rooms were to be located on two upper floors within exiting rooms. The entire project, from off-load to completion took just 3 days. Each of the rooms is separated from the structure into which they are located, thus sound transmission is very low and there is absolutely no disruption to teachers or students across the Media Factory. Another wonderful success story!

Laxton School – Junior OUNDLE

Like so many schools nowadays it is blessed with a multi-purpose hall, as the descriptive suggests it is going to be used for many different activities. Gymnastics, to Choral; Assembly to Orchestral. Such a room must deliver an environment that allows both noisy and quiet activities. As originally built/designed, the room acoustics were very bad. Our acoustic consultant measured a reverberation time (RT) of over 3.5 seconds; it needed to be between 0.8seconds and 1.2 seconds.

Several different types of acoustic treatment and positions were considered, eventually a mix of ceiling hung baffles and strategically sized and positioned wall panels were selected for their acoustic and aesthetic characteristics. The work was carried out during the early summer of 2009 in just 5 days. The environment is now ideal, as verified by Andrew Forbes, Director of Music at Oundle School and 2010/2011 President of The Music Masters and Mistress’s Association (MMA) - see his comments below:

Leeds College of Art - Modular room installation

The students at Leeds College of Art had a need for 2 sound-proof music rooms for practice and recording, and as a result the college decided to get in touch with Amadeus. A site survey at the beginning of 2009 identified an unused space in a very large, very high, storage cupboard. As this was located near to a stairwell and elevated corridor it was decided to form a mezzanine floor onto which 2 specially designed modular music rooms could be located.

As the newly created floor was to be located close to very large windows it was decided the entire front walls of each room should be fully glazed; this was also to include one side wall. Visibility and use of Natural Light were an important part of the brief. We also needed to ensure there was no noise transmission as one side of the new rooms is the Theatre which is in regular use. Sound management was a critical feature of the client brief.

Imagine conducting a full Brass Band practice in a room faintly reminiscent of an “echo-chamber!?”. Sound levels across the frequency range where scary, to the point where you had an overwhelming need to put on ear protection; mufflers at the very least! This is what welcomed AAS during the initial site survey. We observed and heard “band practice”; our ears were assailed, our heads spun, 40 minutes later, band practice having ended, we were able to “hear ourselves think”.

The RT (reverberation time) and flutter echo’s (FE’s) made it impossible to hear with any clarity and as “the audience” it was frequently impossible to make out the individual personality of each instrument type, let alone enjoy the composition, or being able to appreciate the undoubted skill of the individual band members. The RT’s were well over 4 seconds; the FE’s exacerbated the problem.

The solution was a series of suspended 3m x 1.2m x 50mm acoustic panels across sections of ceiling; this was supported by a number of other wall panels of differing types and size. The RT is now down to where it should be at around 1.5 > - <1.8 The band, the conductor and occasional visitors like AAS now find a perfect harmony of sound! See photos below:
